Guy de Maupassant :




                            Guy de Maupassant(1850-1893) was a popular 19th century French writer and its consider to be the one of the fathers of the modern short story.


                                         He was born at the Chateau de Miromesniel, Dieppe. Maupassant started his writing career when he was in his thirties. He was a poet, novelist and short story writer who wrote among the Franco-Purssian war of the 1870s with a clear and conscious style and skillful plot development.

                                        He was born in a Miromesniel castle in Dieppe. He published one collection of poems, 3 travel books, six novels and 300 short stories in his left time.




Summary of story :




                            The diamond necklace is a story about the consequences of greed and discontent. A women(Mathilde) who is unhappy with her low social status gets her chance to go to a ball and wants to impress everyone with her appearance. she borrows Diamond Necklace from a friend and has a wonderful time at the ball.


                                            But she drops a necklace on the way back and cannot recover it. She and her husband find the necklace that looks like the one she lost, but it costs a fortune. They give it to the friend and take a big debt. They spend years working hard to repay the debt.

                                             One day, Mathilde runs into a friend on the street and reveals what happened to the Necklace. The friend is stunned and says that the necklace she gave her was fake and had no value. The story illustrates how we should be grateful for what we have and not pursue false desires that can destroy our lives.




Character :          





Mathilde Loisel : She is the main character of the story. She is a beautiful but unhappy woman who wants to have rich and elegant life. She does not like her husband who works as a clerk in the Minister of Education or their small apartment. She thinks that she could have more than what she has. She is a proud, self-centered and greedy. She gets a diamond necklace from a friend to look good at the ball but she drops it and has to pay for it for 10 years she goes through a lot of trouble and suffering because of her mistake.


Monsieur Loisel : The husband of Mathilde. He is a kind loyal and a working man who loves his wife and tries to please her. He is satisfied with his simple life and does not share his wife's ambitions for a wealth and status. His sacrifices his savings, his inheritance and his future to help his wife pay for necklace. He works extra hours, takes some multiple jobs and lives in a shabby apartment. He endures a lot of suffering and stress because of his wife's mistake. He does not complain or blame on his wife but supports her throughout their hard times.


Madame Forestier : She is Mathilde's friend. She is wealthy and such stylish woman. She gives her Diamond Necklace to wear for for ball but does not reveal that it is not real. When they see each other again after 10 years because Mathilde has grown old. She surprised and upset when she finds out what happened to the necklace she says that Mathilde have avoided so much hardships if she had been honest with her sooner.





Theme :




                                             The theme of the story The Diamond Necklace by Guy de Maupassant is that appearance can be deceiving and the greedy can be lead to ruin.





Moral Of The Story :




                                 The moral of the story is to be happy appreciate things you have.
